Salem Interrogations

 1. What type of document is this ? It's a historical dialogue taken from a trial (the Salem Witch Trials). 2. It takes place in March 1692, in Salem village. The broad (general) context is that of witch-hunting. 3. In doc 1, the accused Sarah Good, judge W. Stoughton and his two assitants are part of the document. In doc. 2, the judge and the assistants are the same. Sarah Good is replaced with Rebekah Nurse, and there's also Abigail and Thomas Puttman's wife who speaks, and Ann Puttman just reacts to what the judge was saying. 4. It seems like the judge was not really impartial, he acted like a lawyer with suspicious questions, not like a judge : "What creature do you imploy (sic) then?" The rule of the judge is to discover if the accused is guilty or not ; here, he just accuses Sarah Good again and again. Her reaction is quite simple : she keeps on repeating she's innocent. The assistants wrote that she was rebellious. R. Nurse's answers were religious.

 5. Witches existed in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance period under the name "wise women" (and wise men). They lived outside of society and would service the community in different ways. They still exist today in different forms and shapes.  But they would sometimes be accused of Maleficium , that is, using their gift to promote evil. One such wise woman was Ursula Kempler. She was tried for corrupting crops (de corrompre les récoltes) ; she confessed having familiars (they could be toads, cats, dog, hares, goats...). In the movie, the witch lives in the forest, on her own. Traditional representations of witches describe them by groups of three. These are reminiscent of the Greek Moirai, or Fates, who presided over the destiny of men and gods.  6. there are fantastic elements before Thomasin speaks with the goat and turns into a witch = when Caleb spits the apple, or when Sam is kidnapped.

Travail confinement 3

-  Is historical accuracy important in this movie? How is it achieved? - What is the role of family in this story?  - How is the figure of the witch r...
